I am the master of my fate.

Tomorrow morning, Josh and I will lock our apartment in Seoul for the last time as we head out for 7 weeks of traveling in South East Asia and India.  We’ve said our goodbyes, closed our bank accounts, and sold anything that was too big to fit in our packs or ship back home.  It’s almost go time.  How lucky are we?

I was thinking about this question the other day while I was running.  I was suddenly overcome with gratitude for the amazing adventures Josh and I have been able to go on.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized it wasn’t just about luck or fortune or “destiny” but also about how we respond to the incredible blessings in our lives.

Fiesta Night with the Jorgeys

We L-O-V-E fiesta nights.  I inherited my love for American-ized Mexican food from my parents. They have frequented the same Mexican restaurant down the street from their house at least once a week for the past decade or so.  When I was in high school, they would go on Friday nights.  On Saturday morning, I’d wake up, eat my mom’s left over beans and chicken-chimichunga for breakfast.  I’d then run the 5 miles to my high school and go to gymnastics practice for 3 hours.

Tree Pose–get rooted

Tree pose is one of my favorite balancing poses.  I like that it is simple and gives me an incredible sense of rootedness.  It’s also a fun pose to play in.  Sometimes I sway in the “wind”, close my eyes, or go onto my toes for added challenge.  Some days just standing on one foot is challenge enough.

Getting Younger Every Day…

I have previously mentioned that through exercise and healthy eating we can create biologically younger bodies.  Can I get a Hell Yeah??!! Our bodies have this INCREDIBLE ability to regenerate cells. People who exercise regularly and eat nutritionally dense diets are breaking down the old cells and rebuilding them with younger, healthier ones faster than their sedentary junk-food lovin’ peers.

A year or so ago I made a promise to myself to never use age as an excuse for poor health.  After seeing people in their late 70’s and 80’s participating in a 90 km road race for their 50th year in a row, I realized that people who bitch about their age are just looking for something to bitch about. No judgement if you think you may fall into this category.  Hope isn’t lost, your body has an insane ability to heal itself. You aren’t in bondage to your bitching. People from all different walks of life are begining to realize this.

Pre-Run Eats

I’ve had a few people ask me what I eat before I run/workout.  The answer varies quite a bit depending on the type of exercise and duration.  In his book, Thrive (I know, I know, I talk about it all the time), Brendan Brazier says that the food we eat right before a workout is less important than the food we ate following out last workout. When we refuel properly after a workout, our body will have energy stored and ready to rock for the next one.

That being said, it can be really helpful to have a pre-run snack to top up energy levels.  I usually run in the morning because its just a great way to start my day and I find I have the most energy in A.M.  I usually have a little snack before I head out the door, just to get me going and to keep hunger at bay until breakfast.
