21 Day Cleanse Round Up

The 21 Day cleanse begins one week from today!  That means there are cupboards to clean out, half full wine bottles to finish (wouldn’t want them to go to waste!), recipe searching to do, meal planning, and some serious self-tough-love to embark on.  I’ve already had several people tell me they are keen to join the ranks and I’d love to extend the invitation to anyone out there who is looking to kick start 2014 with a good old fashion bang!  Um…well you know what I mean.

More details will unfold, but I wanted to give you a run down of what this cleanse will look like so ya’ll can make informed decisions on the matter!  Basically, we’ll be eating a completely plant based whole foods diet–nourishing our awesome bods with nutrient dense goodness.  We’ll be avoiding things such as processed foods, added sugars, alcohol, and excess caffeine (and of course animal products). You’ll either be aiming for a 60/40 or 80/20 ratio–meaning that 60-80 percent of your food will come from raw vegetables (think big ass salads) and fruit while the remaining 20-40 percent will come from cooked veggies, beans and lentils, sweet potatoes, and whole grains (quinoa, brown rice, wild rice, millet, oats, etc).  Here’s a quick break down of the life giving goods we’ll be eating!

Unlimited:

  • Raw Vegetables
  • Raw Fruits
  • Homemade green juices and smoothies
  • steamed veggies
  • Sweet potatoes
  • dry (if you you must eat from a can, buy Garden of Eden organics!) beans and lentils–super easy and cheap to prepare!
  • Tea–herbal, green kombucha

Moderate (1-2 servings each category per day)

  • Raw nuts and Seeds (including nut and seed butters)
  • quinoa, brown rice, millet, barley, wild rice, oats
  • olives (yes, I love them too much not to give them their own spot)
  • 1/2 avocado
  • organic coffee (This is sort of a splurge, if you can go without, do!)

Limit (1-2 servings per week)

  • whole grain/sprouted or gluten free bread
  • Gluten free pasta such as quinoa
  • multi-colored baby potatoes
  • 1 oz dark chocolate
  • added oil  (that’s right, we’re doing water sautes, folks).

Every seventh day you’ll have the option of a juice and smoothie feast!  Notice I didn’t say fast!  The idea is to flood your body with nourishment while giving the ol’ digestive system a break!  No starvation, just lots of clean liquids!   More on this later!

Taking my lead from this guy–he fills up on veggies, fruits, beans (oh my gosh does he love beans), chia and hemp seeds, and mama’s milk (I won’t be drinking any breast milk–milk is for babies, guys. come on.)

You might be thinking, “So…what will a typical day look like?”  Well, I’m so glad you asked!  Here is what a day of clean eating looks like for me!

Morning:

First thing upon rising I have a glass of luke warm water with lemon juice and a dash of cayenne pepper.  It announces to my liver I’m ready to get the show on the road!

I follow with a cup or two of green tea and then either a cup of organic coffee with almond milk or teechino (herbal coffee).

Usually after a couple hot beverages I’m ready to clean out the digestive track, TMI?  Maybe but it is seriously one of the most important aspects of my morning.  Physically and spiritually, it is like a signal to me that today is new, yesterday is gone.

Now I’m ready for a BIG green smoothie or a huge glass of freshly made green juice!

Make it sexy–drink your green juice in a wine glass while you get ready in the morning. Put on your best undies, stand in front of the mirror with your juice and love your body while you blow dry your hair…

After my workout, I will either go for more green juice or sip on some kombucha tea.  Kombucha is a fermented tea with lots of good for your gut bacteria.  It also is naturally carbonated which I love.  I’m currently brewing my own batch of kombucha because store bought can get a bit pricy– upwards of 3 bucks a bottle.

It’s LUNCH time baby and I’m super stoked for a huge salad.  I literally fill a serving bowl with mixed organic greens and then start dressing it up.  My favorite things to add in are bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, sweet potato chunks, beans, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes, avocado, nutritional yeast (found in the bulk section–cheesy flavor, high in vitamin b-12), lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and a small handful of walnuts, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds on top.  Mix it good. mix it good.  eat it up. mmmm….

Leif, prior to starting solids trying to get in on my salad last summer. Its actually still a problem because he doesn’t have teeth and he’s always sneaking greens! I’m constantly having to do the finger hook so he doesn’t choke! Silly vegan.

Mid afternoon snack–herbal tea with almond milk, apple or other fruit, kombucha, or green juice

Oh Holla!  It’s dinner time.  Again, I try to get a big salad in… although not usually as big as lunch and some form of cooked  veggies, beans or tofu, and some whole grains.  Really, my favorite dinner of all time is roasted root veggies tossed in olive oil and vinegar and spiced up real tasty.  This is still do-able during the cleanse but I’ll just have to be more conscious about how much oil and salt I’m adding and not go so heavy on the potatoes!  More carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, peppers, zucchini, and the sorts.

I’ll be posting regularly throughout the cleanse–sharing struggles, ideas, recipes, high points, low points.  I find that cleansing my body of excess gunk, not only does wonders for me physically but my mental and spiritual clarity intensifies as well.  Stimulants and depressants as well as processed crazy sas can make us grumpy, foggy, depressed, and down right blob-like.

So, (this is me speaking to myself), its time to buck up Butter Cup.  21 days without wine or sugar will not kill you!  As a matter of fact, millions of people do it every day!  Its time to flood your body, mind, and spirit with life giving nourishment–I’m talking green stuff.  I’m talking laughter.  I’m talking a pot of herbal tea with a friend.  I’m talking snuggling with Leif.  I’m talking yoga. I’m talking sweat.  I’m talking gratitude, reading, stretching your mind, challenging your ability to love.

Oh man. I’m excited!  But as I told my dear sister-in-law.  Get the gummy bears out of the house.  Hiding them won’t do.  On about day 3 of the cleanse you might get all sorts of grumpy.  You might think, “this is stupid.  I can’t do this” and go digging those bitchy bears out of the depths of your closet. That’s the detox gruffalo talking (He’s a real jerk). Your body is getting rid of crap that doesn’t serve it and you might feel uncomfortable.  Ride it out!  Grab a book.  Go for a walk. Take a bath. Call a friend.  Drink some tea!  Sooth yourself without love not gunk.   So. Nows the time.  Clean our your cupboards and start filling them with the delicious, life giving foods listed above!

New Year’s Reso—what?

What a year it has been!  2013 has been chalk full of amazing gifts– the best, of course, being the bundle of love I delivered in March.  This year I also transitioned to being a stay at home mama and we became home owners.  Josh graduated with his second bachelors and started working full time again. My brother and his fiance welcomed my sweet niece, Lily, into the world just three days after my cousin gave birth to Baby Catherine in October. So, in 2013 we welcomed three babies and had 2 engagements in the family! We also started a little project in communal living as we rent two bedrooms to friends and have one friend living on his bus with his dog Buddha out back!   Its been a year of finding new rhythms, letting go of expectations, and allowing myself to stay in bed til 8 or 8:30 each morning to snuggle with Leif (its not going to last forever, I’m going to enjoy this special time).  Its been a year of injury and attempted healing from a horrible bout with Plantar Fascists (which is still happening by the way).
